Spotlight: Antonov An-26

The An-26 is a pocket-sized powerhouse from the acclaimed Ukrainian aircraft manufacturer, Antonov; though the An-26 is a small cargo plane, relatively-speaking, it truly packs a punch with its versatility and almost-universal application.

This twin-engine, rear-loading plane, though small in stature, punches well above its class in adaptability. Rare amongst cargo aircraft, its size works to its advantage, giving it the ability to land on short runways. The rear-loading door's configuration means that there is also a great deal of manoeuvrability in loading options -- both the ramp and door can be moved out of the way, meaning that cargo can be wheeled right up to the door itself. Additionally, the small internal crane allows for greater ease when loading freight, streamlining the process.

Statistics:

  • Payload: 5500kg (12,125lbs)
  • Hold size: 11.1 x 2.2 x 1.6m (length x width x height)
  • Door size: 1.65 x 2.2m (height x width)

Though a relatively small plane in the cargo world, it can transport large pieces of cargo; at ACS, we regularly facilitate charters of the An-26 for a variety of industries; the aircraft is particularly popular with oil and gas industries, in the transportation of concert equipment, and Aircraft on Ground (AOG) eventualities. Oil drill bits, large pipes for the energy industry, and aircraft parts -- such as the leading edge of wings -- are the bread-and-butter in the An-26's transportation arsenal.

Although classified as a short- to medium-range aircraft, the An-26's adaptability makes it an excellent choice in a variety of situations. With an usually-short lead time of 24-48 hours, urgent go-now charters often favour the An-26 as an accessible and adaptable aircraft. Recent An-26 charters arranged by ACS's Cargo department include the transportation of freight from France to Liberia, the UK to Canada, and Luxembourg to Angola.

While all of these attributes, individually, make excellent characteristics for a cargo aircraft, the combination of them all makes the An-26 one-of-a-kind. With almost-unmatched versatility and a constant demand for its ability to land in more unusual, and remote locations, the Antonov An-26 is a true marvel within the aviation industry.
