Transporting a large pipe for a damaged oil rig
A logistics solutions provider for the oil and gas industry urgently requested our help getting a damaged offshore oil rig in Brazil back in action. A 33-foot-long pipe weighing half a tonne was needed from the United States in order to repair the rig. With no time to waste, our cargo experts set about transporting the critical spare part.
Our Solution
Route: Houston > Piarco > Rio de Janeiro
Aircraft: Antonov An-12
Our team immediately got to work finding an aircraft capable of loading such a heavy and outsized piece of cargo. Reaching out to local operators in Houston, we sourced an Antonov An-12 located in the region that could accommodate the pipe, incorporating a stop in Trinidad en route to refuel the aircraft and allow the crew to rest.
The part was needed in Rio de Janeiro ASAP, but permit processing times in Brazil wouldn’t allow for an immediate departure from Houston. Undeterred, we secured a letter of urgency to expedite the process and avoid a costly delay.
On the day of the flight, the pipe was loaded into the rear of the An-12 using a forklift and the aircraft’s internal crane. Everything ran smoothly and our client appreciated our speed and efficiency in delivering the cargo.
