CITY GUIDE MUNICH

Private jet charter and flights to Munich

Cosmopolitan and medieval in equal parts, affluent Munich is one of Europe’s cleanest and safest cities. With its glorious green spaces, famous beer gardens and opulent churches and palaces, this is a great destination for sightseeing, shopping and socialising. The kingdom of Bavaria was created by Napoleon in 1806 and, although it came to an end in 1918, its history is still very much celebrated in Munich. Renowned beer and folk festival Oktoberfest starts in the third weekend of September, honouring the 1810 royal wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. Dirndls and lederhosen aside, this iconic festival is an elaborate medley of food, funfairs, fancy dress and, of course, beer. If you’re not in the city in September, the 500-year-old Hofbräuhaus Beer Hall is open year-round for a taste of Bavarian tavern culture.

A centre for the arts, Munich is home to the Bavarian State Opera Company and the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. Another cultural highlight is Alte Pinakothek, one of the oldest art galleries in the world, which is home to treasures from the Wittelsbach dynasty, an extensive collection of Rubens and Leonardo da Vinci’s Virgin and Child.

If you prefer high-tech design to highbrow art, visit the BMW Museum at Olympiapark. This modern masterpiece’s old and new car collections offer an extensive look into the motoring giant’s technical developments and racing history. While at Olympiapark, daredevils can grab some rope and carabiners for a thrilling rooftop tour of the Olympic Stadium.

Back on solid ground, peruse some of Munich’s architectural gems. Gothic Frauenkirche is Munich’s largest Catholic Church and you can climb to the top of its iconic twin towers for spectacular views of the Bavarian Alps. In the heart of the city you’ll find the central square of Marienplatz, home to an enchanting century-old glockenspiel, and the Residenz, a Royal Palace where opulent state and art rooms showcase the Baroque, Rococo and neoclassical periods. A few blocks from here is Munich’s English Garden, a stunning green space that’s larger than New York’s Central Park.

Up the ante with a stay at the five-star Mandarin Oriental in the heart of the Old Town (Room 608 features a turret and is a favourite of Prince Charles); a shopping spree on chic Maximilianstraße Promenade, where the rich and well-dressed like to flash their cash; and a clandestine-style dinner 600 feet above the city at the Michelin-starred Restaurant 181.
