CITY GUIDE WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Covering a third of the country (yet home to just 10 per cent of the population), Western Australia is big. Big on dramatic landscapes, big on wildlife, big on local personalities – and big on distances between attractions. Commercial regional flights can be limited, so let Air Charter Service help you charter flights to Western Australia so you can spend more time discovering its unspoilt natural landscapes. Far away from the East Coast crowds, this vast state is so chilled-out and empty that even the kangaroos laze on the beach. Perth is Western Australia’s state capital and gateway to the wine regions of the south and the beaches and reefs of the north. Life in this laid-back city centres on the Swan River and Kings Park – one of the world’s largest inner-city parklands – but it has some great cool cafés and independent shops, too.

Just south of Perth, the port town of Fremantle is a must-visit to experience a fascinating convict history and sample the produce of its excellent microbreweries and food markets. Heading further south, the landscape becomes lush and green. Renowned wine region Margaret River boasts over 120 wineries and top quality local produce. The Margaret River Gourmet Escape, held every November, is one of the state’s top foodie festivals.

Western Australia’s coastline is dotted with dazzling white-sand beaches. Southern highlights include Little Beach in Albany, Twilight Beach in Esperance and Lucky Bay in Cape Le Grand National Park – where you’ll see the kangaroos relaxing on the beach. The beaches north of Perth are equally breathtaking: Shark Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed for its Hamelin Pool stromatolites, dugong population and friendly dolphins that visit the shoreline at Monkey Mia almost daily.

Our favourite stretch of coastline is the Coral Coast, where the UNESCO-listed Ningaloo Reef rivals Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef for sheer beauty. Home to a rich marine life including over 500 species of fish, manta rays and majestic whale sharks, Ningaloo is a dream for divers and snorkellers and, as it’s a fringing reef, in many places you can snorkel straight from the beach. Next to the Ningaloo Marine Park, Cape Range National Park boasts spectacularly rugged limestone ranges and miles of unspoilt sands. Stay at a beachside safari camp for the ultimate in wild luxury accommodation.

Over 800 miles from Ningaloo, the pearling town of Broome is home to one the state’s most famous beaches, Cable Beach, known for its dramatic sunsets over the ocean. Broome is a popular tourist spot, but venture a little further north and you’ll find one of Western Australia’s most secluded gems: Cape Leveque. This remote indigenous community-owned region is an explosion of colour, with rust-red cliffs, glistening white sands and turquoise ocean – there’s nowhere better to get away from it all.

Inland Western Australia is a world away from its pristine beaches. The Kimberley is wild and vast; an ancient landscape of empty Outback, deep gorges, waterfalls, creeks and mountain ranges. It’s one of the world’s last wilderness frontiers. In the Purnululu National Park, the Bungle Bungle Range is one of the most mysterious of Western Australia’s rock formations; a series of beehive-like striped karsts. Other remarkable rock formations in the state include the eerie Pinnacles spires that rise out of the desert of Nambung National Park, and Wave Rock in Hyden, which resembles a surf break frozen in granite. Aside from its natural wonders, inland Western Australia’s other charms include its friendly goldmining towns – like Kalgoorlie, where the economy has been driven by gold since 1893.
